Birks & Mayors Inc. made a further net loss of $2.0 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2008, than that of $913,000 in the first quarter of 2007. Its net sales reduced by 1.1% to value at $68.1 million, compared to the first quarter of 2007 including an extra week of April. Barring the sales of the one extra week in April 2006, net sales rose 5.5%.
The comparable sales at its stores in the US and Canadian markets increased by 4%. As of August 01, 2007, the company runs 38 stores in Canada and 30 in America.
The increase was attributed to a higher average retail price per transaction. Comparable sales also benefited from the strengthening of the Canadian dollar, the firm added.
