The Natural History Museum, London will open its permanent mineral gallery – ‘The Vault’ on November 28. This gallery will exhibit a plethora of rare gems and metals including a 19th century sourced 1,700-carat topaz, an orange ‘padparadscha’ sapphire from Sri Lanka, and a unique pink ‘morganite’ beryl from Madagascar, along with the Aurora collection, a group of 296 naturally colored diamonds, and rare meteorites that fell on Earth, one such apparently to be from Mars.%%The museum was apparently forced to shut down a similar exhibit, which displayed only the world’s largest diamonds, due to a police warning about an imminent gang raid. The museum has insisted to the Guardian Unlimited that security for the upcoming exhibit is at its height and that the gems will be safe.
