THE New York Diamond Dealers Club has requested the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) to "make public" the names of workers and staff involved in the bribery scandal related to an April 2005 lawsuit against GIA. The Diamond Dealers Club requested the move from Tom Moses, GIAs senior Vice President, in order to "exercise its authority to discipline members of the trade involved in grading irregularities." The board discussed with Moses the impact the bribery case has on the credibility of the grading process, and thus consumer confidence in diamonds even though GIA has taken all necessary steps to ensure that no such incidence shall take place in future.
"He 'Moses' was also informed that if the credibility to the grading process was not immediately restored, this could have a harmful impact on the consumer confidence that is so vital to the ongoing operation and success of our industry," the Dealers Club wrote in a statement following the meeting. The board also said members were urged to report "in writing" to the organization any information on the improper grading of diamonds. This information would be forwarded for action to GIA and other officials, and, used to discipline members of our trade involved in grading irregularities.
The board also indicated that it was studying the possibility of securing compensation for damages caused by activities involved in the illegal grading of stones. It also expressed an interest in doing so to ensure that such a practice does not again occur. "We must be vigorous in enacting and implementing measures to maintain the highest standards of integrity consumers rightfully expect from every segment of the diamond industry," the board members jointly concluded.
