THE diamond robbery from FedEx’s Melsbroek Service Center near Brussels officially remains a mystery to investigators, but FedEx revealed that the delivery courier company was fully cooperating with investigators on whether or not the robbers had "inside information" about the diamonds at the FedEx center on November 25, near the Brussels airport. FedEx spokeswoman Anne Majerus said, “The investigation continues and she could not elaborate further. We would reveal nothing further.”
The November heist was the second in 2005 at that FedEx location, the first of which occurred in June. Majerus said, "We have zero tolerance for such activity and regard the security of our customers shipments and employees a top priority.” An anonymous source indicated that some diamond dealers in Antwerp are shipping diamonds as "documents" through FedEx in order to avoid customs.
Majerus said that the "accuracy of the customs declaration of each package is the responsibility of the shipper. Under the FedEx Conditions of Carriage, diamonds cannot be shipped as documents. "If this does occur and we become aware of it, we refuse the package," she added. Until further notice, FedEx will continue to deliver diamond packages "from low to high value, each working day," she said. "In order to preserve the safety of our customers high value shipments we discuss safety and security measure with our customers individually," Majerus clearified. FedEx regularly monitors tests, and reviews security and safety measures at each of their facilities worldwide.
