Kolkata gets VVIP Nod for Fast Track Development as Jewellery Export Centre

India’s Commerce & Industries Minister {{Kamal Nath}} has recommended the development of Kolkata as the country’s yet another mega jewellery exporting centre. The Chairman of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, {{Sanjay Kothari}} promptly endorsed the welcome initiative. Both of them, impressed by the metropolis’ recent prowess in jewellery exports, were speaking at the 33rd annual Export Awards ceremonial of the GJEPC. West Bengal Chief Minister, {{Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee}} presided over the grand gala event that honoured India’s ace exporters of gems and jewellery registering meritorious performance during 2005-06. %% This is the first time that the Council’s prestigious annual export awards ceremonial was organized at Kolkata which is developing steadily to claim the next niche position as a prime jewellery centre. Aptly designed as a diamond and fascinatingly decorated with lovely flowers, Rotunda Hall at the Manikanchan SEZ was the venue for this inspiring event. After formally receiving the VVIPs, welcoming the exports glitterati and distinguished guests from allied sectors, the main function commenced at 12 noon on November 25, 2006 with gay excitement all round with flashing camera lights imparting a twinkling look to the ceremony. %% {{Kolkata Underlined as Jewellery Hub:}}$$ Emphasizing that Kolkata should be developed as a prime jewellery export centre, Chief Guest {{Kamal Nath }}observed, “Gems and jewellery exports have emerged as a key factor in India’s objective of doubling the country’s percentage share in global merchandise trade by 2009 and for generating employment opportunities. I congratulate the Council and all the export award winners. I am sure they would keep up the endeavour to excel in future also.” %% A visibly elated {{C.M. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee}} presiding over the function expressed in his speech, “Being the CM of West Bengal it is really a pleasure for me to host an event of such magnitude. It is also very pleasing to see the way gems and jewelley industry is being boosted in Kolkata. I wish all the winners and the Council very best of luck and hope that they would reach greater heights in future.” %% {{Kothari Lauds Exporters}}$$ Chairman of the GJEPC, {{Sanjay Kothari}} said, “The Council offers its heartiest congratulations to stalwarts of the gems and jewellery industry for their outstanding exports performance. It is an honor for the Council to reward those who have won the laurels for the Indian gems and jewellery industry.” Sanjay Kothari, impressed with the meritorious performance of the IT sector suggested that IITs should start contributing to the precious sector. %% Kothari revealed that this year Kolkata has really done well in exports of jewellery and now a well deserved emphasis is being laid on making it a hub for the jewellery industry.

{{Thunderous Applause for the Glitterati:}}$$ These formal speeches and exhortations were followed by the presentation of export award trophies to the proud, distinguished winners by the Chief Guests amid appreciative jubiliation and thunderous applause. Top exporters, outstanding importers and helpful bankers queued up to receive their awards one by one. %%{{Distinguished Attendees:}}$$ Other important dignitaries present on the occasion were {{Pankaj Parekh}}, Chairman, Eastern Region GJEPC, {{Vasant Mehta}} Vice Chairman GJEPC and {{Kanubhai Shah}}; Convener Awards Sub- committee. %% Besides Mumbai, some Council Executive Members from the Pink City had also flown down especially for the event. They included {{Rajiv Jain, Vijay Chordia, Nirmal Bardiya, Sudhir Kasliwal}} and {{Umesh Gupta}}. %% Not only did the invitees poured in from the jewellery sector but the event also attracted invitees from various collaborating sectors including banks like ABN-AMRO, SBI, plus people from designing institutes, commerce ministry and also foreign guests. %%{{Well done GJEPC!}}$$ Besides our Media team okaying the program as 'well organized' compared to the last year’s event, some visitors also shared our view, among them {{S.C. Rajgopalan}}, Manager SBI who commented, “This year the program is well organized. Last year there was hurry and confusion. Right from the trained watch dogs to electronic gadgets, security was taken care of at every nook and corner, as not only the political VVIPs but also the top precious exporters of the country had turned up at the function. %% {{Moments of Ecstasy!}}$$ The well-attended, smoothly conducted ceremonial afforded moments of pride and honor, moments of jubilation and achievement and above all moments of recognition not just for the award winners but also for the entire precious sector and the dynamic nation that is emerging as a niche centre for gems and jewellery. %% The awards function was followed by a speech on ‘Vision 2015 for the Indian Jewellery Industry’, by KPMG. %% After the award distribution the guests gathered for a sumptuous lunch organized by the Council. %%{{ Fastest-track Commemoration!}}$$ As soon as the Export Awards Ceremonial was over, the Journal House media team got busy in its fastest track coverage.
