The “DREAM” Diamond
{{(100.09 carats) Fancy Vivid Yellow Cushion Cut Diamond}}
Diamonds are beautiful, mysterious and rare. The world’s most sought after jewel is billions of years old and rare in that each has survived an amazing natural journey. %% Awaiting discovery was one stone in particular, an exceptional rough crystal of 190.72 carats with immense presence and beauty. Nature had conspired to throw out this hot lava fireball from its volcanic birth deep beneath the earth’s crust. Those who saw the diamond for the first time described it as “being on fire with flames of orange and sensational yellows resembling a golden sun, radiating glory and warmth.” Imagine what wonders it would do for a beautiful woman. Sensuality rocks! %% The yellow and orange hues in the rough diamond come from the natural tint within the diamond. When Laurence Graff saw the diamond he was mesmerized by its unusual hue and color and became entranced by its dream-like allure. The rough diamond was of such exceptional color that it was sent to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) for thorough testing to verify that it was entirely natural.
Having found a rough gemstone, the way it is cut and polished is vital to the value of the diamond. The challenge was to preserve this splendid color, alongside the magical weight of 100 carats. %% Graff’s master cutter, Antonio Bianco, known as Nino, felt honoured to be entrusted with this extraordinary gem in the rough. According to Nino “it was a relentless process of total engagement, commitment and endless maneuvering over a period of 9 months to transform the 190.72 rough crystal into a magnificent polished diamond of 100.09 carats of such unprecedented natural vivid color”. The knowledge required for this incredibly demanding skill has often been passed down over the centuries from generation to generation and Nino is no exception. His family has been in the lapidary business for generations. Nino started his official apprenticeship in Johannesburg at the age of 18 and today both his sons are following in his footsteps. Having handled some of the most important diamonds in the world Nino has acquired amongst the trade the reputation of the Ultimate Master Cutter. And ultimately it is the skill of the cutter to reveal the beauty, fire and brilliance of the diamond. %% {{A Dream Came True !}}
The heart-stopping moment came when Nino and his team of skilled craftsmen realized the orange-yellow fire burning outside hid a pure vivid yellow dream diamond of magnificent quality. In Nino’s words “it was a truly lifetime experience and one which in all likelihood will not be surpassed”. %% In October 2006, Laurence Graff, Chairman of luxury jewellers Graff Diamonds unveiled ‘The Dream Diamond’ at London’s Kensington Palace after receiving his fourth Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade. He wouldn’t say how much he paid for the 100.09 carat vivid yellow jewel which was set on a magnificent pear-shape diamond necklace glittering like a starry night. But, had this twinkle in his eye that shone brighter than any diamond in the room. One can guess that The King of Diamonds is already onto his next discovery. ##http://www.graffdiamonds.com##www.graffdiamonds.com##
