Participants at the recently held Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada’s (PDAC) 2009 convention in Toronto, were treated to two presentations on diamond gemology, conducted by Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) distinguished research fellow - Dr. James Shigley. Each presentation spanning 25-minutes duration were held during a conference session on diamonds, with a participation of almost 400 people. %% The first presentation on coloured diamonds summarised the causes of colour in a diamond, touching upon famous coloured diamonds, coloured diamond prices, geographic sources and manufacturing for jewellery use, basic concepts behind colour grading and quality evaluation of coloured diamonds provided by the GIA Laboratory. %% The second presentation on synthetic diamonds and treated diamonds summarised some ideas on their gemological identification, background and functional aspects of producing synthetic diamonds with both categories of gem materials present in the marketplace, possible problems for jewelleers in proper information disclosure about the identity of such diamonds. %% The PDAC 2009 is an international opportunity for exploration companies, mining organisations, investors, government agencies and non-governmental organisations to meet each year to focus on exploration and the world’s mining and minerals industries. More than 18,000 attendees from 52 countries, including Brazil, Chile, China, Greenland, Africa, Mongolia and New Zealand, attended the event. “Our convention topics normally cover mineral exploration and mining,” said Patricia Sheahan, a member of the PDAC Convention Committee. “Dr. Shigley made the first presentation ever to our group about diamonds and their properties as a gemstone. It was an eye-opening experience.”
