The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has joined the membership of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). The RJC is engaged in creating a responsible supply chain from mine to retail, and has over 100 members from all sectors of the diamond and gold supply chain, trade associations and service providers. GIA is looking at this membership as a medium to infuse stronger ethical practices in the trade. GIA would be able to certify its business practices against the RJC system, as it is imperative for all RJC Council members to adopt the RJC System through imbibing the RJC Code of Practices. %% The members also need to be certified through third‐party auditing. The RJC system builds on international standards like the Kimberley Process and ISO standards such as SA8000 and ISO 14001.
