Polished diamond imports in May 2009 for U.S., showed a drop of 46 percent and valued at $1.25 billion. Polished diamond exports decreased by 48 percent and amounted to $660 million. In effect, the country’s net polished diamond imports slipped down by 43 percent to $590 million, during the said month. %% Rough diamond imports also declined by 73 percent to $24 million; rough diamond exports showed a similar decrease of 70 percent to $14 million. The net rough imports for the country amounted to $10 million, reflecting a drop of 76 percent over the net rough imports of May 2008. The country’s net diamond imports for the month amounted to $600 million, as compared to the $1.1 billion in the same month last year. %% The first five months of 2009 saw polished diamond imports into the U.S. amounting to $4.4 billion, which showed a drop of almost 50 percent of polished imports in the corresponding months of 2008. Exports of polished goods slipped down by 45 percent to $3.2 billion. Rough imports amounted to $84 million dropping by 76 percent, while rough exports dipped 69 percent to $58 million.
