De Beers positive about Asian markets

Diamond sales in the first quarter of 2013 were 'slightly better' than last year, driven by Chinese New Year and a revival in demand in the United States.

Prices of rough diamonds strengthened for Gem Diamonds during the second quarter of 2009, reports say. The company noted an increase in prices for almost all types including at the Ellendale mine and Letseng mine, during the said period. %% The average price per carat for a diamond from the Letseng mine, increased by 47 percent and valued $1,496 in the second quarter, as compared to the average per carat price in the first quarter of 2009. But it was 44 percent lower than the average per carat price in second quarter of 2008. %% The company has received a good price for its larger diamonds. It has achieved selling 20 diamonds for over $20,000 per carat, amounting to an average price of $29,563 per carat during the first six months of 2009. Sales in the first half of the current year dipped 18 percent to $74.1 million, while production rose by 6 percent to 47,165 carats.
