Christie’s will auction off almost 200 lots from Princess Margaret’s personal jewelry collection in London from June 13-14, 2006 along with more than 600 lots of furniture, china, monogrammed silver boxes, art, Fabergé items and decorative things. The jewelry alone is expected to bring in several million dollars, several times presale estimates, said Helen Molesworth, a jewelry specialist at Christie’s who is coordinating the sale. The princess’s children are holding the sale to defray estate taxes for their mother, who died in 2002. %% Among the more notable items is the 1870 Poltimore Tiara, which the princess wore at Westminster Abbey for the first televised royal wedding in 1960. It can be worn as either a necklace or individual brooches and is expected to fetch $260,000 to $350,000. Also up for sale is a necklace that Queen Mary wore to the coronation of her son, King George VI, and later gave to the princess, who was her granddaughter. It contains 34 diamonds with a total weight of approximately 85 carats and is estimated at $350,000 to $520,000. %% Jewelry containing colored stones is also on the block, including a sapphire and diamond brooch Queen Mary gave the princess for her confirmation day, a ruby, cultured pearl and diamond necklace the princess wore on her second birthday, estimated at $2,100 to $2,600, and a ruby and diamond ring made a few years before her death in 2002, which is estimated at $26,000 to $35,000.
