The Murowa Diamonds mine has won the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Best Corporate Social Responsibility Programs award for 2009, for its community programmes, especially its employee welfare and HIV/AIDS programmes, announced Rio Tinto. %% Rio Tinto owns 78 percent in the Murowa Diamonds mine, located near Zvishavane in south-west Zimbabwe. “This is a great achievement for us,” said Niels Kristensen, Managing Director of Murowa Diamonds. “Effective management of our community relationships is as important to our commercial success as is the management of our business operations. During its six years of existence Murowa has worked with local partners and communities to ensure we played a significant role in the continued improvement of the local communities”, he further added. %% Murowa Diamonds’ community initiatives include education, health, agriculture and business development, and reach out to more than 50,000 people across five wards. The programmes have supported households through touch situations including a prolonged drought and when Zimbabwe was experiencing one of the harshest AIDS epidemics in the world. %% Riozim Limited is the 22 percent stakeholder in the Murowa Diamonds mine. Olivia Dzawo, Murowa Diamonds Health and Safety Manager accepted the award from Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on behalf of the company at a dinner held in Gweru recently.
