|*With a tradition of a 100 years behind it,{{ Punjabi Saraf Jewellers}} has recently opened a new, modern store in its home base of Indore. While this rich legacy is evident in the jewellery it creates and carries in its stores,, the company is very much based in the present and a product of its times, with a strong belief that a jeweller must create a proper ambience and offer the customer more than just jewellery, {{Diamond World}} discovers in the course of an interaction with {{Summet Anand}}. *| Punjabi Saraf traces its roots to over 100 years back. The Anands, the family behind the enterprise, were a flourishing family of jewellers earlier based in Rawalpindi (now in Pakistan) at the time when India was still undivided. They shifted to Delhi and Haridwar and made their presence felt in those cities. Sumeet Anand says that “Punjabi Saraf made Indore its home during the reign of Holkars”.%% The main operations began in Bada Sarafa, a landmark of Indore where the first showroom was established. “Punjabi Saraf is known for its quality and the main USP is “Baat Viswas ki nahi Pramaan ki hai”,” says Anand. Loosely translated it means, “It’s not a matter of faith, but of proof,” which given the context implies certification of its products. Anand continues to explain “The certified jewellery coupled with superior designs and authenticity won the goodwill of thousands of customers. Punjabi Saraf is one of the best jewellers in Indore with a sound customer base.” %% The popularity of the jeweller has only grown over the years. Due to increasing demand and increasing customers, Anand informa us, Punjabi Saraf opened a new flagship store in the popular Chappan Dukan in Indore recently. With this addition, Punjabi Saraf’s area of operation has expanded to two stores. “The stores portray a transformation of culture in the ambience of the store,” says Anand. “With the most ancient designs but equipped with the latest technology which makes the store a perfect blend of the ancient and modernity.”
Anand tells us that Punjabi Saraf’s exteriors are designed on its belief “Customer is King.” Inspired by Holkar architecture, the Indorean and Maheshwar experience is reflected in the creation of the exteriors. The main entry of the showroom welcomes the person with an intricately designed gate made in stone by artisans from Rajasthan. The imposing imperial design of the gate is inspired from the gate of the Maheshwar temple. A similar theme is created in wood inside the showroom in the visible partitions which carry the same royal touch. The core highlight of the showroom is its royal, imperial ambience, inspired by Holkar architecture in Indore and Maheshwar. %% The entire space on the first floor is clearly demarcated by various jewellery sections keeping the functional and comfort aspects in mind. “The areas are arranged on the lines of the concept “The Paths of Exploration” rather than isles with straight lines and right angles which keeps the customer on his toes to be aware of his surroundings,” says Anand. %% The counters are all equipped with all relevant modern gadgets. This keeps the customer focused on the surroundings and the jewellery on display. To make the shopping experience more enjoyable Punjabi Saraf has created some special features. The Main Level (Level One) with its various jewelley zones also features a Private Lounge Area and a Kids care area. Level two on the other hand has an Event Zone and the administrative section. %% Punjabi Saraf is equipped with state-of-the-art security systems. The entire showroom has been protected by the latest alarm and security systems. The strong vault system, CCTV camera, 24x7 professional security guards, all have been put in place to ensure the highest level of safety and security. Proper fire extinguishers and fire alarms with emergency exits have also been installed to keep the place safe.

Apart from this, Punjabi Saraf is also extremely aware and concerned about environmental issues and several environment friendly features have been introduced in the new showroom. For example, Punjabi Saraf has taken steps to equip its showroom with gadgets and technology for controlled energy consumption. The LED bulbs and TFT screens that are installed help reduce power consumption. Green generators have been installed to consume less power at the same time keeping the environment free of pollution. %% Explaining the approach of Punjabi Saraf, Anand says: “It’s time to sell more than jewellery,” stressing thereby the great importance of the ambience of the store and the resulting experience that any jeweller offers its customers. Going by customer feedback, it seems that Punjabi Saraf is on the right track. Anand informs us that most people have reacted enthusiastically and positively to the new store and he sums up their reaction thus: “They say it’s ‘My kind of place’”. As a result Anand says there has been a 360 degree impact on image and the sales of the store. %% Bombarded with several questions about the product of the company by us, Anand says succinctly and simply, “Any product carries great art, inspiration, motifs, story - flavour is my inventory; it may be a creation worth Rs 5000 or Rs. 50 lakh.” %% Of course once you have a wonderful selling environment and a product to match, the important thing is to have the right staff to make the sale to the consumer. And Anand is equally eloquent about his sales people. “My team is my greatest strength, at my store, a and they are addressed as:”Jewellery consultants”’, he says. “All are in uniform and well groomed; and educated about all the finer points about the product, its quality, they are aware of the need for transparency and above all well-versed in client servicing.
Punjabi Saraf undertakes various marketing activities through the year. It participates in the Annual Jewellery Expo “One in the World”, holds fashion shows and several celebratory events at the store. “Though”, Anand says, “We’ve never promoted freebies, discounts and offers.” %% The reason for this is not only a strong belief in themselves but also a search for a customer with a similar outlook. “I seek my kind of client, one who’s looking for the ultimate product, fair business practices, an honest price with the best buying experience.” %% Happily, there seem to be more than enough people on the same wavelength as the success of the second showroom of this jeweller has proved. With a strong century-long innings behind it, Punjabi Saraf would like to expand further, but is in no hurry to do so. But when it does, it will take the same measured and deliberate steps which has marked its progress over decades.
