%% Leading industry players are stranded on a desert island. The only way they can leave is to resolve one of the most vexing debates of our time: how to reconcile fair trade standards with the realities of politics and the marketplace. That is the theme for the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) debate center – “Shipwrecked!”–scheduled to conclude GIA Symposium 2011: Advancing the Science and Business of Gems. The global conference, to be held at GIA’s Carlsbad world headquarters on May 29-30, will mark the Institute’s 80thanniversary. %% The debate center provides a platform to discuss the most pertinent issues affecting the industry today. One of the most popular draws at previous GIA Symposia, the debate center has no prepared statements or speeches. It is a free-flowing exchange between participants and with the audience that is designed to challenge, entertain and stimulate thinking beyond conventional wisdom. %% In that spirit, the “Shipwrecked” participants will rescue themselves with their contributions. They must offer reality-based solutions for a more ethical supply chain that yields more evenly balanced returns for local miners and their villages while maintaining competitive prices throughout the diamond and colored stone pipeline. The castaways will compete for resources and the audience’s attention. %% This debate’s conversation will take ideas from previous discussions on this subject at conferences around the world and build upon them to develop new levels of understanding. The “captain” and “first mate” will need to navigate the issues of fair trade, best business practices and sustainability. Their mission: stimulate ideas that offer solutions to help resolve the conflicting issues of the marketplace. Senior industry advocates will argue on the basis of their experience on site in Africa and Madagascar. Adding a gemological twist to this important discussion, a leading scientist will weigh in on the practical limitations of determining locality of origin for some stones, such as conflict diamonds, and an expert in gem appraisal and evaluation will address the impact of fair trade practices in the showroom. The participants include: %% Captain: %% • Dr. Brian Nattrass, managing partner of Sustainability Partners %% First Mate: %% • Susan M. Jacques, president and CEO of Borsheims Fine Jewelry and Gifts %% Passenger List: %% • Tom Cushman, managing director of Richfield Investor Services %% • Richard Drucker, president of Gemworld International %% • Martin Rapaport, chairman of The Rapaport Group %% • Dr. George Rossman, professor of mineralogy at the California Institute of Technology %%
