The 39th Annual Award ceremony organised on October 8 by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi, witnessed turnout of crème de le crème of the gem and jewellery industry, as well as country’s political and social circle. %% Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit graced the occasion as the chief guest, while Union Minister of State, Commerce and Industry, Jyotiraditya Scindia was the guest of honour. Rajiv Jain, Chairman, GJEPC welcomed the guests, as Dikshit inaugurated the event by lighting the traditional lamp. %% The awards acknowledge the efforts of the exporters of Indian gem and jewellery industry and celebrate the excellence displayed by the exporters of India. %% Addressing the gathering, Scindia elaborately discussed various important issues that concern the industry like – opportunities in global market; financial, managerial and creative threats that lurk large on the industry and so on. He congratulated the winners and lauded the efforts of GJEPC. “Indian gem and jewellery industry makes India proud on the global gem and jewellery map. It also provides employment opportunity to many in the country and because of this, government must take care of the industry and help it grow and in turn increase employment opportunity for country’s youth.” %% Talking about steps to help the industry, Scindia said, “As a part of their export strategy, the government has planned to make efforts to double the gem and jewellery export by 2014. Apart from this, many grants and incentives have also been given to GJEPC to promote Indian goods in overseas markets.” %% During the event, Rajiv Jain presented the Kundan Meena Book, a coffee table book, to Scindia. The book was sponsored by Jaipur Jewellery Show and was published by Diamond World magazine. %% The evening also had the right dosage of entertainment with an array of musical, cultural performances. Apart from the winners, GJEPC staff, who have been serving the council from the past two decades, were also felicitated and their efforts were lauded. Jyotiraditya Scindia handed over the trophies to the winners. %% Kanubhai B Shah, convener of award committee, presented the vote of thanks.
