On the wake of one of the most popular festivals of India, Dasherra, the gem and jewellery is industry is bustling with activity. With the trade reports depicting a rise in gold owing to the festive season and large buying expected from the consumers, most jewellery markets in India are busy today. But, this is not in the case of Gujarat’s, flourishing metropolitan, Rajkot. %% The gem and jewellery market of Rajkot is closed for today and the jewellers are in the police station. The reason being, an absurd rule of the government that made it mandatory to interrogate any individual carrying a sum of Rs 2,50,000/- and above. This rule was made to curb any malpractices during the election that will be held in Gujarat. %% The rule was applied on the common man including ladies who had come out shopping for Dasherra. Taking this is into consideration, the jewellery market had to be shut down making it lose one of its most important business day. %% The Rajkot Gold Dealers Association are standing united and are at the police stations right now to try and save at least half of the business day. One of the members’ from Rajkot Dealers Association on the condition of anonymity said, “The Rajkot market is in a bad condition right now. Tomorrow being the Dasherra, it is our peak period but because of this rule we are suffering. Though the Election Commission had instructed to apply this rule only the individuals related to the politicians and politics, common people of Rajkot have been dragged to the police station. We want to know why is the government targeting the jewellery market and not anyone else?” %%
