Sunita Shekhawat was always very passionate about designs and colours; perhaps it is owing to her background that she was drawn towards creating jewellery. She completed her Diploma in Gemology and Jewellery Designing from Gems &Jewellery Export Promotion Council in Jaipur and Masters in History of Art and Culture from Jodhpur.%% Jewellery designing had always been her hobby, which she turned into her profession. She was always fascinated by exquisite jewellery designs. On this, she says, “Since my fore-fathers and great fore-fathers had links with the raj gharana's of Jodhpur, I could get access to see the beautifully hand crafted jewellery which otherwise is in-accessible to others. These visits to view the collection of the past era inspired me to create designer pieces”. %% Nothing that is easily achievable is ever worth achieving. SunitaShekhawat started out without any support or backing but with only her flair and love for jewellery designing, she took the plunge. Moreover, being a woman in a male-dominated society proved to be even more challenging to her. However, in her entire journey she came to realise that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. What you need is to be strongly determined, focused and hard working. And there should be no place for the word ‘Impossible’ in one’s dictionary! %% Sunita Shekhawat draws her inspiration from culture, nature and art. Be itjaali work from old architecture or the wall paintings. She also derived inspiration from the royal mughal architecture.“Since childhood, I have been passionate about designs and colours and have a fascination for jewellery. Being part of a royal gharana in Jodhpur, I have grown up attending several royal weddings and birthdays. It’s perhaps this background that had drawn me into creating my own jewellery,” she shares. When asked about the most difficult aspect of jewellery design, she says, “Implementation of designs is the most difficult. Ideas are mine but getting it implemented from the karigars is the most difficult aspect”. %% It is said that Rajput women are usually restricted to domestic life but Sunita Shekhawat decided to materialize her dreams. Obviously, the beginning was not a rosy one at all and for her artistic aspirations shewas not praised either. But, since the start of her career, she was confident about her skills and abilities as a designer. But after associating with Royalties and when she started designing for them, she realised it is not a cakewalk. Not that her confidence was shaken, but she could see that she had a long way to go and a lot more to learn.“My mother has been my guardian angel throughout and she has molded me into what I am today. And in the years that followed, my husband has always given me encouragement,” she says when quizzed about her moral support. %%
It gives Shekhawat a boost to perform better and harder. It is a constant process of evolution that makes her tick. She has earned many Awards and Achievements like:The Best Female Entrepreneur at JJS & Gold Souk Awards, Best Female Entrepreneur by IWEC 2010 (International Women Entrepreneurial Competition) Award by Chamber of Cape Town & Manhattan, - Bhaskar Woman of the year Award, Best Participant at JJS 2010 (Jaipur Jewellery Show), Swarovski Gems – Best Design Appreciation Award 2012, Jewels of Jaipur Award by DNA, Samaj Gaurav Award for being internationally recognised in the field of Jewellery Designing, My FM Women of Jaipur Award, Awarded as The Best Traditional RajasthaniJewellery Designer Award by Nexgen Excellence Awards and the most recent one which was a coverage by Fox Traveller Channel for their TV Show “What’s with Indian Women”. %% On the current industry, Sunita Shekhawat feels that, with new entrants into the field, competition is definitely getting stronger. Those who exhibit real talent certainly get noticed, appreciated and eventually get supported as well. “The industry has done a lot to promote and support new talent whenever it had the chance to. It has contributed towards the development of industry by organizing trade shows, launching jewellery trade magazines and other governing bodies like The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council and Gem & Jewellery Trade Council of India which play very significant role in encouraging new talents. %% “Whatever may be the career path, firm determination and hard work is inimitable to achieve success. Every unconventional career has three stages. During the first one, everyone from friends to foes criticises your work. Only a few well-wishers stand by you. This is the decisive phase. If you follow your dreams, the next phase, which eventually comes, is when you are appreciated. The last and the best phase is when people start following your trends. “Be passionate and follow your dreams, success would have to follow you ultimately,” the designer articulates. %% Sunita Shekhawat’s creation depicts any woman who is independent in her thinking and sensibilities, is artistic and classy. Indian urban women should wear a piece, which reflects character, and which blends traditional as well as contemporary style and it should also depict Indian art and craft and Shekhawat’s designs tics all these boxes. %% “My jewellery is not limited to women only, but also for men who are cosmopolitan in their sensibilities. My personal style is— wear whatever feels good to you. During daytime it is comfort and for evening it is a statement piece,” Shekhawat tells about her personal choice. %% Sunita Shekhawat’s jewellery is manufactured in, in-house production house, right from the designing, inception, marketing, selling. She does not source anything from outside and it is all under one roof and that is a USP in its self. %%
Talking about her recent collection, she tells us about the Pret Collection with vibrant colours such as pastel green, turquoise, baby pink, apple green, pottery blue color, ivory color, ice blue, lemon yellow, etc.The inspiration being the effervescent, Pink City Jaipur. %% After so many collections and years of experience, it was hard for Shekhawat to share with us the toughest pieces she has created. “The toughest jewellery piece was a reversible kundan meena set and a man’s cross belt designed for one of the royalties.,” she confesses. %% For a designer, muse is like water to a fish. While from celebrities, she likes the style of Vidya Balan and Yami Gautam. Apart from these, all the Royaltieshave been hermuse.%% Accolades, compliments etc. all have been aplenty.
