India is soon to become a manufacturing hub for Louis Vuitton, as the French company would be setting up a shoe factory in Pondicherry by December 2008. The facility is being designed by French architect Jean Marc Sandrolini over 130,000 sq ft. at a 30-acre site in a village, 14 km further from Pondicherry.
Louis Vuitton would manufacture the shoes in Italy, apart from the souls which would be crafted by the Indian factory - Les Ateliers de Pondicherry. The shoes will carry the ‘made in Italy’ label. According to a statement by Feedback Ventures, an Indian infrastructure consultant, the company would manage the factory construction. This will be Louis Vuitton’s first factory beyond Europe and the United States.
