‘Fair trade’ jewellery, a conceptual category in jewellery is being introduced by Martin Rapaport. It symbolises ethical diamonds used in the jewellery and the fair treatment given to the diamond polishers and cutters.
The ‘ethically’ valued jewelry could help promote the South African local diamond workers with the help of professional designers and private business houses. Rapaport estimates the concept to drive the share of ‘fair trade’ jewellery to 10% of the world’s $60 billion market for jewellery.
He is in the fray of forming an organisation to help the South African diamond polishing companies reach the global markets, through strong marketing networks. The social cause ‘premium’ added to the jewellery would not be a deterrent to its sales, according to Rapaport.
