Exclusive Interview with Nitin Khandelwal, first elected chairman of GJF

Nitin Khandelwal, veteran of gem and jewellery industry, is the newly elected chairman of All India Gems & Jewellery Federation (GJF). Kavita Parab spoke to Nitin Khandelwal know more about his vision and plans for the further growth of GJF.

Q: Please describe the feeling of being elected as the new chairman of GJF?

A: I am indeed honoured by the opportunity given to me to lead the Industry’s apex body, which is one of the most prestigious organizations in the industry. I would like to thank all the members of GJF and the entire team of COAs for trusting me with this great responsibility.

Q: How will you make difference as a Chairman?

A: One can only make a difference if he believes in unity. All the Past Chairmen and COAs have passionately played a vital role in developing GJF and the Industry, and their support and guidance will continue to help sail the industry towards progress and prosperity. I am confident that with the support from our members and the Government, we will achieve our desired goals.

Q: Please give an outline of the goals or aims you have for the betterment of the industry whilst being the Chairman.

A: The main onus is on to make our industry more organized and compliant, for which we will soon be launching various initiatives across the nation. We are planning to initiate Labham programme in many cities. Besides, there will also be National level seminars on GST. Jewellers Identification Card (JID) is rolled out and soon we will start enrolling members. Apart from these, there are many other important matters that need to be addressed on war footing basis, such as GST, getting Council status for GJF, initiating new platforms for promotion etc.

Q: You have been associated with GJF in various capacities in the past. How do you think that experience would be helpful to you in your new journey as a chairman?

A: I have been the torch bearer of many GJF projects. The one that is very close to my heart is the flagship programme, Preferred Manufacturer of India (PMI). In today’s competitive world, it is extremely important to stay one step ahead and offer best services to your clients. Technology also plays a crucial role, as the reach of Smartphone and service providers has increased phenomenally. We should take full benefit of the latest technology available with us, as it is also the vision of our Honourable PM Narendra Modi.

Q: What are your thoughts on the progress of GJF under the previous chairman? In which way will be your leadership be different than his?

A: Since its inception in 2005, GJF has become a pillar of protection, promotion and progress for the Gems & Jewellery Industry, the credit goes to the selfless efforts and perseverance of all Past Chairmen. They have always been a source of inspiration for many, and with their guidance, I am hopeful to achieve the desired goals of GJF and the Industry.

Q: What is your message to the industry?

A: The industry has to remain united. The government will only listen to us if we have one voice, and one consensus, as Mother Teresa said “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot. Together we can do great things.”

Q: Is there anything that you'd like to add?

A: We are planning to undertake membership drive across the nation. Also, we are planning to get affiliation with all the associations / federations of India and empower them. Innovation will play a key role in the Industry’s future, wherein newer and better platforms of promotion are to be encouraged.
