Looks like the education system of Indian diamond and jewellery sector is likely to get redesigned shortly. %%What when the committee appointed to study India’s National Design Policy is likely to recommend the setting up of four additional National Institutes of Design (NIDs), along the lines of the existing Ahmedabad-based NID, whose curriculum includes, among other disciplines, jewellery design.%%The committee will submit its recommendations to the commerce and industry ministry within the next 10 days.%%As per reports, not just this, the institutes are also likely to be elevated to the status of “University”, meaning they could award Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, from diplomas at present.%%The committee also recommended setting up an India Design Council whose main functions will include undertaking design awareness programs, accrediting design institutions, developing and standardising design syllabi, etc., for all Indian design institutions, and protecting intellectual property in the area of designs.
