Deciding upon a set of rules to ensure uniformity in diamond grading, is what the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), is presently working upon. The BIS is the nodal agency appointed to implement the government’s gold hallmarking legislation. %% When the standards have been firmed up, they would be made compulsory for all diamond and gemstone laboratories operating in India. With this, the mandate of also having the BIS standards mark, may be done away with, although the BIS has to take a decision on it. %% The BIS also intends to make the standards mark appear on the diamonds through laser inscription.
