The recent agitation by diamond cutters and polishers of the Surat diamond factories, seems to have ended on a mutual consent. The argument, which the workers laid was that the employers were not keen on increasing their wages despite agreement received from the trade bodies. In a meeting held between Surat Diamond Association and workers, it has been agreed to end the agitation after 20 percent increase in wages. This decision was in agreement with almost all factory owners. %% Mr. Praveen Bhai Nanavati leading diamond dealer, said that “It was necessary to increase wages in the interest of industry. But the agitation became violent due to some non social elements. It should not have happened. It is necessary to increase the wages as already many workers shift there businesses, many workers have left their work from our country and shifted to China and other countries. If salaries are not raised, India could loose the diamond business in future years from the world scenario”. %% Mr Nanu Bhai Vanani MLA and ex-president of Surat Diamond Association mentioned, “It was really a not labour problem. The wages increased looking to the human grounds. It was long awaited, some industrialist already increased the wages .As per the agreement 20 percent of wages have increased”. Mr C.P.Vanani president of Surat Diamond Association said, “More than 80 percent factory owners agreed to increase the 20 percent rise in the wages”. %% Apart from the 80 percent lot, the smaller players showed a difficulty in increasing wages, owing to the sluggish markets, low price of finished goods and higher costs on roughs, which has forced some to close factories. Vanani added that “There were 6 lac persons in the diamond trade employed in 4000 factories. Already 1 lac workers have left the diamond business and shifted elsewhere, and another 1 lac have shifted to their own villages”. It has been assured that the situation will reach normalcy in three to four days.
