{{Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS),}} the authority of National Standards in India has for the first time established the Indian standards on quality parameters and grading of polished diamonds. %%BIS, after five years of research studies, has established the Indian standards on grading of polished diamonds in line with international norms and standards and released the IS 15766 in two parts, consisting of classification and test methods.%% At a function held at Surat, the diamond city of India, the Indian standards for diamond grading were released by Chandrakant Sanghavi, Chairman of the Indian Diamond Institute and Convener, Diamond Panel, Gujarat region of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council %%P. Sengupta, Deputy Director General, BIS (Western Region) in his inaugural address stated “There were no formal standards adopted by Indian diamond industry to grade diamonds. This is for the first time that BIS has established Indian standards for diamonds. This will benefit the end users immensely through quality assurance of diamonds”. %%Dr. Sneh Bhatla, Head (MTD), BIS New Delhi in her keynote address stressed the need for well established grading standard for the benefit of the Indian diamond industry. BIS standards are the benchmark for the quality of the goods supplied by India. “BIS mark will ensure the credibility and help in quality control”, she pointed out %%Chandrakant Sanghavi, while launching the new diamond grading standards, congratulated BIS for establishing the Indian standards for diamond grading. He referred to the important position that India enjoys in the international markets for diamonds and also asserted that the BIS standards could boost consumer confidence in India. The standards would definitely be useful for the Indian industry. %%
K.K. Sharma, Director of Indian Diamond Institute, welcomed the guests. He traced the history of diamonds in India.%% He added, “Domestic market for diamond studded jewellery is booming. But the consumer should be aware that the product he or she is buying is not a treated or synthetic diamond, also that the product meets all the parameters given by the seller. %%K. T. Ramchandran in his address stated that such a system can give out a message of confidence to consumer in the product. In India, the consumers are not very familiar with the 4-C's of diamonds. Therefore it is the most appropriate time for the industry and the Government of India to adopt a system of grading as approved by the BIS. %%
%%{{Informative Seminar :}} The ceremony was followed by a seminar which was again very informative and interesting. The topics covered by the speakers were: %%Agam Sanghavi of Sanghavi Exports gave a detailed account of modern manufacturing methods adopted by the Indian diamond industry. He compared the traditional style with the most modern and sophisticated methods of diamond cutting. %%Dr. Jayshree Panjikar, Head R & D Department, Gemmological Institute of India in her presentation highlighted the importance of identification of synthetic and treated diamonds from their natural counterparts. The presentation highlighted the HPHT and CVD methods of synthetic diamond manufacturing. %%Mukhopadhya, member Secretary of MTD committee of BIS gave a presentation of the policy and system of BIS diamond grading standards. %%BIS has established Indian standards on grading of polished diamonds in line with international norms, so that the diamonds certified against these Indian standards are accepted globally. The following two Indian Standards on grading of polished diamond have now been published: IS 15766 (Part 1) : 2007 Grading of Polished Diamonds Part 1 Classification %%IS 15766 (Part 2) : 2007 Grading of Polished Diamonds Part 2 Test Methods %%The above Indian standards shall only be used for natural, unmounted, polished diamonds, and not for synthetic treatments diamonds or assembled stones.
