Sotheby's has earned a record sales in its auctions held during the first six months of 2008, aggregating to $3 billion. This is only one side to the coin. Revenues could not multiply at good numbers, and dipped by 8 percent to $449.4 million, followed by a dip in net income by 37 percent to $82.9 million. Revenues in the second quarter of 2008, ending June 30, slid by 5.6 percent to $320.2 million, and a lowered net income amounting $95.3 million, which fell by 11 percent. %% The company although has been practicing a curb on operating expenses considering the sluggish economy. Operating expenses were reduced by 7 percent to $169.3 million, partly achievable by the reduction in incentive bonus accruals due to lower profitability in the first six months offset by increased direct costs due to higher consignment and sales levels in Hong Kong and higher catalogue and sale promotion costs incurred in the New York May Impressionist and Contemporary Art sales. %% The company is not too worried about its results as it has been achieving a good response overall. It has also raised $350 million in new capital offering which was oversubscribed, giving it the edge of more liquidity.
