The diamond trade in India for July 2008, saw a higher import of both rough and polished goods. Polished goods’ export increased by 11 percent to $1.32 billion in the month, while imports hiked by a whooping 65 percent to $795.19 million. The net polished exports in the month (polished exports less imports) although reduced by 25 percent to $527.16 million. According to the year to date period, India saw a 29 percent rise in polished exports, amounting to $9.19 billion, and 132 percent rise in imports valuing to $4.36 billion. Net polished exports fell 8 percent to $4.82 billion during the seven months. %% Imports of rough diamonds increased by 6 percent to $1.14 billion and exports by 40 percent to $65.04 million. Net rough imports (rough imports minus exports) rose 5 percent to $1.07 billion. In the year to date period, rough imports grew 16 percent to $6.84 billion and exports by 40 percent to $490.9 million. Net rough imports grew 15 percent to $6.35 billion. %% India’s July net diamond account (net polished exports less net rough imports) fell 71 percent to $575 million in the red, while for the January through July period fell to a negative $1.53 billion, from a negative $291.56 million one year ago.
