India International Jewellery Show (IIJS-2008) held during one of the precious industry’s lowest ebbs put forth a splendid display of solidarity. Different segments of the industry came together and vowed to complement one another’s efforts to put the sector back on track in the shortest time possible. The IIJS Show was formally inaugurated by Bill Champion, Managing Director, Rio Tinto on August 7, 2008. Other dignitaries gracing the occasion along with hosts Sanjay Kothari, Chairman, Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and Navin Jashnani, Vice- Chairman, GJEPC, were Philip Holden, Managing Director & Chief Marketing Officer, World Gold Council, Rajiv Bhandari, MD, De Beers India and James Courage, Chief Executive – Platinum Guild International. Delivering the welcome address, Sanjay Kothari said, “Our belief is that IIJS is a perfect platform to understand the international market, identify the way modern Indian jewellery retailing industry is shaping up and it provides grounds to prepare for the changing times ahead.” The Show opened to over 19,000 pre-registration visitors including a thumping 1,080 foreign delegates. Asia’s second largest gems and jewellery expo, India International Jewellery Show 2008 featured 795 exhibitors across 1,663 booths. The Show has in fact taken the mould of an event of international importance with 7 overseas pavilions and many international delegations attending.
%% {{Global Platform for Jewellery}} :%%Commenting on the growth of the Indian precious sector Kothari explained, “The last few years have witnessed the entry of several exporters to the domestic market and the birth of 40 or more brands. These developments are bringing about a huge transformation in the business, and this is only the beginning.” He urged the special guests to invest united efforts to promote jewellery as a category universally. He pointed out that it wasn’t as if people were not spending on luxuries during difficult times. Kothari said it would be worth an effort to draw consumers into jewellery showrooms from outlets that sold other luxury products. James Courage of PGI endorsed the message, “Our competition is not amongst ourselves; it is with other luxury products. We have an industry with expertise and resources to create quality offerings that people would want to buy. We need to work hard and work together.” Other members readily agreed to take up the challenge of this initiative to move forward. Undoubtedly, the Show has enhanced the visibility of the Indian Precious Sector on the whole, Navin Jashnani, Convenor IIJS confirms, “Today, IIJS is not only the most important date in the calendar for Indian jewellery sector; it is also the catalyst for its transformation into a modern and forward looking sector. Ever since IIJS became a ‘trade-only’ event ten years ago, it has been the platform for encouraging efficient purchase and inventory models and attracted jewellers from around the country to network for better business growth and profits.” %%{{Bright Precious Future}} :%%Delivering the keynote address, Bill Champion said that he was proud of the 25 years relationship between Rio Tinto and the Indian diamond industry. He underscored that the relationship stood on firm ground and it looks well set to weather any future challenges successfully. Presenting an interesting insight, Champion said that 1.4 billion people would move from rural locations to the cities in the next 20 years. According to him a major proportion of this demographic shift would happen in China and India. The impact of this migration would bring about unprecedented demand for luxury products and services. Continuing further he noted that the diamond industry in India enjoyed the right support from important stakeholders. He also disclosed that his company’s interest in mining projects in India lead them to invest US$5 million and they were so far satisfied with the progress.%%{{Sectoral Solidarity Advocated}} :%%Rajiv Bhandari, De Beers India Managing Director said that it was time for De Beers, Rio Tinto, the World Gold Council, and Platinum Guild International to come on a common platform to promote the jewellery industry. World Gold Council Managing Director & Chief Marketing Officer Philip Olden also supported the call for working unitedly. He said that his organization considered India’s consumption of 20 per cent of global gold production extremely important to its strategy. Speaking on the occasion, James Courage, Chief Officer, Platinum Gold International said that PGI was focused on building consumer familiarity with platinum in the industry. He remarked that the precious sector must not compete within itself, but with other luxury goods, electronics and tempting holidays. %%{{Variety & Gaiety }}:%%The 5-Day IIJS was marked with variety and gaiety. For instance there was a felicitation function to honour the stalwarts of the precious industry on August 6. The annual ABN-AMRO Solitaire Design Awards were presented on August 8 to the finest precious talent across the country. The highly popular ‘Jashn’ Night by GJEPC fascinated on August 9 to packed.

Nagesh, Shoppers’ Stop, Natraja LR, Tata Gold, Vikram Merchant, Rio Tinto Diamonds, Dr. Emile Schoeters, HRD Antwerp, addressed an array of topics on the latest developments taking place in the industry to enlighten the participants.%%{{Awards Night Eulogizes ‘Solitaires’ of India}} :%%The Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) organized the annual ABN-AMRO Solitaire Design Awards on August 8, 2008 at the Grand Hyatt showcasing some of the jewellery industry’s finest talents from across the country. Victor van der Kwast – CEO, International Diamond & Jewellery Group ABN AMRO BANK Amsterdam presided over the function. %%The awards ceremony honored the best chosen designs and also honored the persons who have continually glowed in their chosen professions. Enthralling performances by Raghav Sachar of the Kabul Express fame and Mansi Scott captivated the audience.%%The seven icons who were awarded ‘Solitaires of Life’ were Dev Anand, Asha Parekh, Ajit Wadekar, Suniel Shetty, Prahlad Kakkar, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Shabir Boxwalla as achievers who have left a special mark in their chosen profession.%%The best stall award was bagged by Dipti Amisha followed by Sama Jewellery Pvt. {{Divas in Dream Jewels}} :%%The much talked about ‘Jashn’ Night by GJEPC was held at Renaissance, Mumbai on August, 9. The evening started with cocktails and gradually slid into the realm of glamour and style. Fashion Divas walked the ramp adorned with Gold, Silver, Diamond and Color Stone Jewellery. The show was divided into four categories – Surge, Allure, Revival and ‘Jashn’. The models displayed striking creations by Eros Jewellery, Sangam Chains, Ganjam, Priority Jewels Pvt. Ltd. and Derewala Jewellery Industries. %%{{Felicitating the Sustainers}} :%%Celebrating its Silver Jubilee, India International Jewellery Show awarded the sectors veterans for their contributions during the long journey. The awardees included past and present GJEPC chairmen, conveners of IIJS sub committees since its inception, journalists who have been writing about the industry for decades and others who provided other service.%%The honored awardees were Late Rashmikant Durlabhji (posthumously); Kaushik M Mehta, Harshad R Mehta, Sanjay Kothari, Nandkishore Chhabria, Navin Jashnani, Vasant Mehta, Kishandas Maheshwari and Rajiv Jain. %%Ace journalists, MD Dewani and Madhu Sudan Daga were felicitated with rich tributes%%{{Smiles All Round}}:%%As the India International Jewellery Show reached its highly successful climax some estimates placed the turnout over 40,000. A feeling of satisfaction was evident on almost all the faces manning the stalls. ‘Diamond World’ spot surveys have revealed that the organizers were roundly appreciated for providing excellent logistics, and infrastructure plus reliable security. A majority of the participants voted the Show as successful.%%{{IIJS in February 2009}}:%%Swaying to the tremendous response in the backdrop of lowered expectations, GJEPC announced that the 2009 IIJS Signature high-end-only jewellery show would be held from February 20 to 23. Sanjay Kothari added that meanwhile the Council was preparing to project a ‘Made in India’ branded jewellery promotion in Dubai towards this year end. %%
%%{{Candid Comments }}:%%This year IIJS lacks the flow that is generally associated with this show. However, we are satisfied as we have received focused and specific inquiries. Relatively more international visitors this year and it’s heartening to see so many international pavilions. However, enquiries from the domestic market for jewellery have been slow. The event has been successful in generating momentum across the trade following which many people postponed their purchases till IIJS opened. Fortunately, recession hasn’t hampered the Show. I see more international buyers this time. %%The Show has been good for us. We have just started a jewellery brand called Sanskriti and have received many queries from prospective buyers.
