(We appologise for the misprint in the headline in the previous article) The diamond trade in Belgium has recorded a good diamond trade in dollar terms for September 2008, an indicative of rising prices. Volume of exports and imports increased less, or faced declines. Exports of polished stones scaled up by 40.87 percent to $1.39 billion, and in volume by 8.92 percent to 894,598.92 carats. Import of polished goods hiked by 75.68 percent to $1.31 billion in September, and saw a considerable increase in its volume, that of 23.78 percent amounting to 920,292.56 carats. %% Rough exports also jumped by 34.79 percent to $1.102 billion in the month but in terms of volume it fell by 13.82 percent to 10,692,378.26 carats. Imports of roughs climbed 34.21 percent to $1.12 billion, but in volume garnered just 0.47 percent increase, amounting to 11,830,569.31 carats. %% In the three quarters ending September 2008, polished exports increased by 24.68 percent to $9.79 billion in value, but decreased by 2.93 percent in volume to 6,824,555.2 carats. Rough exports increased by 9.81 percent to $9.3 billion in value and dipped by 9.70 percent to 99,033,431.27 carats in volume. Polished imports also jumped by 32.75 percent to $9.6 billion in value and 5.82 percent to 7,703,245.69 carats in volume. Rough imports in value were up by 19.2 percent to $9.06 billion, but slid 8.51 percent to 92,443,839.1 carats. %% Region-wise exports of polished diamonds in the three quarters, saw a mixed result. To the United States, exports dipped by 12.88 percent to 990,894.45 carats, but rose 15.67 percent to $2.66 billion in value. To Hong Kong, exports increased by 0.64 percent to 1,078,227.48 carats in volume, and 35.55 percent to $1.77 billion, in value. Exports to India in volume increased by 14.1 percent to 653,911.85 carats, and 78.62 percent ($549.8 million) in value.
