At the 35th Annual 2007-08 Export Awards Function of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) at Chennai on September 20, 2008, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu - Dr. M. Karunanidhi blessed the Export Aces and wished them a brighter future. Responding to the request made by Sanjay A. Kothari, the then Chairman, GJEPC, Dr. Karunanidhi said the Council had sought land on the outskirts of Chennai free of cost. If the Central Government also gives consent, I will definitely examine the request and take appropriate steps. Regarding the request for waiver of Purchase Tax on gold supplied to exporters, Karunanidhi said he would discuss the matter with the Finance Secretary, and, if possible, act on it. %%Dr. Karunanidhi gave away awards for meritorious exports during 2007-08 of different categories of the precious sector.%%Sanjay Kothari explained, “This awards function is special as it comes in the year when GJEPC celebrated the Silver Jubilee of the globally hailed India International Jewellery Show (IIJS-2008) and marks new peaks in exports of India’s gems and jewellery industry despite odds. %%Kothari added, these awards are an attempt by the Council to recognize and encourage the talent that exists in the industry.
