Rough diamond exports from Russia amounted to 22,844,000 carats in volume and US$1.529 billion in value, for the period of January to October 2008. The maximum exports from Russia were received by the European Union, amounting to 16,326,000 carats or US$1.129 billion. The EU accounted for around 71 percent of Russian rough exports. %% Rough diamond imports into Russia amounted to 215,151 carats in volume and US$30.75 million in volume from EU countries in the nine months of 2008. The imports in Q3 of 2008, amounted to 151,890 carats, which increased by more than two times the imports in the first six months of 2008, which were 73,289 carats. Owing to the economic slowdown and reduced demand, the country is not hopeful to cross its total rough exports of last year, which amounted to US$2.37 billion.
