Media reports suggest that the US retail has faced its worst holiday shopping season since at least 1970, following the market slowdown, heavy discounting coupled with harsh winter, as per the International Council of Shopping Centers. As recorded by ICSC-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales index, sales at US chain stores dipped by 1.8 percent in the week ending December 27, as compared to the same week last year. %% Estimates by ICSC indicate that the holiday sales in November and December may fall by 1.5 percent to 2 percent, the first decline since the ICSC began tracking holiday sales in 1969. Consumer spending is expected to dip further once the holiday season is over, posing a bleak retail environment for the coming months. %% The heavy discounts of retailers feature within 60-70 percent, along with efforts of bold promotions, and additional discounting, could not garner the number of sales as expected.
