International Gemological Institute (IGI) has set up its first ‘Satellite Laboratory’ in Thrissur, Kerala, and announced the new facility on 28 May 2008. Thrissur is a manufacturing hub for diamond jewellers in Southern India. So far, leading jewellers in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, have been depending upon IGI’s services via its mobile laboratory facility, which certifies diamond jewellery at the showroom itself. %% By having a base at the focal point ‘Thrissur’ IGI intends to provide ease of services, operations and reducing costs for IGI as well as the jewellers in and around Thrissur. Also, Thrissur gives IGI the scope to close the gap with jewellers/ manufacturers in South India, and mark the potential of South India as a mature market. The setting up of the lab in Thrissur would support the need of reducing costs without compromising on quality and consumer awareness, during the current recession time.
