The 45th Bangkok Gem & Jewellery Fair, organised by the Thai Gem and Jewellery Traders Association (TGJTA), began on 26th February, 2010, with its opening ceremony presided over by H.E.Porntiva Nakasai, Minister of Commerce. The first day, unfolded on a positive note, busier than the previous years, and a healthy number of buyers from Turkey and Middle East countries. %% Mr.Vichai Assarasakorn , president of TGJTA mentioned at a press conference that " It was very challenging that the first day of the show was also the day of the final verdict by the court on the property of Mr.Thaksin, so we were worried and the exhibitors also were concern that everything goes smooth in Bangkok and there is no problem in the city and the show. We co-ordinated with the government and made our exhibitors comfortable that nothing would happen at the show venue and there would be enough security available. This government is very supportive and helpful to our industry so, we are happy to have a government like this." %% There were 6000 pre-registered visitors to the show this year, in comparison to 4000 in 2008, indicating that business is recovering and that the Thailand’s gem and jewellery industry has a demand in the world. %% The Thai gem and jewellery industry is awaiting the announcement of the Zero Vat legislations to be released any time now in the royal gazette, which will be the first step in promoting Thailand as a world gem and jewellery hub. Also, the Ploi thai, initiative between the Thai government and the Thai gem and jewellery traders association aims at branding Thailand's gem and jewellery products , is also a part of the Thailand world gem & jewellery hub programme.
