Local artisans and traders turned out in large numbers at a day-long seminar conducted by The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) at Khambat, Gujarat in the last week of May to raise awareness on use of non-hazardous processes and technologies in agate manufacturing. %% The seminar was addressed by Smt. Pannaben Momaya, Mamalatdar, Khambhat, Shri Rajiv Jain, Vice-Chairman, GJEPC, Shri Ashok Bhansali, Bhansali Trust, Shri Harish Gandhi, President & Shri Khushmant Patel, Secretary, Khambhat Akik Grahak Udyog Vikas Mandal and Shri Shanti Bhai Patel president GJCTI. %% Khambat is a traditional centre for cutting and polishing agate, a semi-precious stone that is used in jewellery manufacturing. Though it is still a cottage based industry mostly run from artisans’ homes, the introduction of mechanized hand driven machines can increase silica dust, which is a potential hazard, leading to silicosis. %% However, GJEPC noted that the incidence of this is marginal as more and more artisans are using the wet cutting process and implementing other safety measures. The GJEPC seminar aimed at enhancing the use of such safer and more productive technology as well as mass-manufacturing. More details on all these aspects were presented through a video film by Shri Rajesh Dhamani.
