A sharp rise was noted in Israel’s diamond trade between January –June 2010, when compared to the same six months of 2009, according to Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor’s Diamond Controller Shmuel Mordechai. %% {{Exports:}}Net polished diamond exports rose 91.7 percent to $3.002 billion ($1.566 billion in H1’09). Net rough diamond exports increased 104.1 percent to $1.624 billion ($796 million in H1’ 09). %% {{Imports:}}Net rough diamond imports rose 113.3 percent to $1.817 billion ($852 million in H1’09). Net polished diamond imports spurred 105.2 percent to $1.882 billion ($916 million in H1’09). %% {{Markets:}} United States accounted for 52 percent of polished diamond exports (net polished exports -$1.211 billion), Hong Kong accounted 25 percent (net polished exports - $820 million), Belgium accounted 7 percent (net polished exports - $260 million), Switzerland accounted 5 percent and India accounted 2 percent (net polished exports - $113 million). Net polished exports to China rose to $93 million, compared to $33 million in H1 in 2009. %% The Diamond Controller noted that the second quarter of 2010 showed a significant improvement over the first quarter, when polished exports rose by 55 percent over 2009. Moti Ganz, Chairman of the Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies (IDI), said, “We are not surprised by the statistics, since the Israeli Diamond Industry is experiencing a pronounced upturn in activity. We are confident that the Israeli industry will continue to grow. We look forward to a return to our previous levels of activity”. %% Eli Avidar, IDI Managing Director, said that IDI was actively supporting the industry through marketing initiatives, trade shows and outreach to new and developing markets, such as China and India.
