The Kimberley Process Plenary Meetings began today, with a gathering of over 300 people to discuss the way forward with the KP. The meeting is being hosted by Israel at the International convention center , Jerusalem until 4th November 2010. Israel is chairing the meeting with Mr. Boaz Hirsch as chairperson from the Ministry of Israel .The gathering is a string representation of major producing , manufacturing and trading countries. %% On day one, the central focus and main concern of the KP revolve around sustaining confidence in the system, with discussions on improvements in it if any, and the issue of how to deal with Zimbabwen diamonds . %% In his address, WDC president Eli Izhakoff opined that “To succeed, KP must be an inclusive system. It works because all participants remain convinced that it is better to remain engaged in the Kimberley Process, rather than to opt out. If we would ever lose the element of inclusiveness, KP will be rendered ineffective and ultimately worthless”. He expemplified his statement with the outcome at the World Diamond Council Annual Meeting in St. Petersburg in July , that “Compromise and agreement were the only acceptable outcomes. Had they not been achieved, the very foundations of our business and the economies of a number African states would have been shaken to the core.” He encouraged “Inclusiveness can only be guaranteed through dialogue and mutual respect.” %% Industry, Trade, and Labor Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer also opined that the KP has come a long way, in leading change for the better. "We must not let the challenges we face prevent us from working together toward our common goal – this organization is too important to fail," the minister declared. He noted that all participants were united in one belief – that conflict diamonds harm everyone involved in the diamond trade. Ben-Eliezer concluded his remarks to the plenum by urging all participants to work together "in harmony" to overcome the existing challenges and to "work together to make the Kimberley Process more effective, especially when it comes to implementation and enforcement."
