Hallmarking of precious metal articles has been approved by the Union Cabinet of India. The Consumer Affairs Ministry of India had moved an amendment, in which it sought the removal of the restrictive manner in which ‘scheduled industry' is referred to in the Section 14 of the BIS Act 1986, to bring articles and/ or process of any industry under compulsory certification regime, which is important for heath, safety, environment , prevention of deceptive practices and security. %% The proposal sent out by the Consumer Affairs Ministry of India focused on bringing hallmarking of precious metals under the compulsory certification regime from the current voluntary scheme. According to the Section 14 of the BIS Act 1986, the Consumer Affairs Ministry was empowered to include only those industrial products and processes that are listed under the Industries Development and Regulation Act (IDRA), 1951, under mandatory hallmarking, but as gold jewellery was so far not included in IRDA, its hallmarking was not compulsory so far. %% The approval by the Cabinet towards the Bureau of Indian Standards (Amendment) Bill, 2011, would make it easier to reinforce consumer confidence in the articles, reports suggest.
