The metal has been sourced from opposite sides of the globe - from Rio Tinto's Kennecott Utah Copper mine near Salt Lake City, US, and from the Oyu Tolgoi project in Mongolia.

"The metal takes a journey of about a month and a half from the time it's mined to when it is refined and ready for market," said Becky Miller, metallurgical engineer and graduate at Kennecott Utah Copper's concentrator. "There are two thousand people involved in processing this metal and we are proud that it will reward the best athletes in the world."

Rio Tinto's involvement with the Olympic Games signifies its commitment to sustainable development. The company also sees this as a good opportunity to ensure all their employees get a chance to participate in some way in the world's biggest sporting event.

This is the second time that the miner will supply the metal for Olympic medals, having previously done so for the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympics. The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) will unveil the medal design later this year.
