GIA (Gemological Institute of America) recently launched a Simplified Chinese version of its 4Cs iPad application (app), broadening the usage of this application. “By creating the 4Cs iPad app in Simplified Chinese, we reach a significant demographic for gems and jewelry,” said Kathryn Kimmel, GIA vice president and chief marketing officer.%% The free 4Cs iPad application (app), as it originally is meant, serves both retailers and consumers. Consumers can use it to understand the 4Cs (Color, Clarity, Cut and Carat weight) of diamond quality through video and interactive tools. The consumer version is downloadable for free on iTunes. Kimmel added that “As a global organization dedicated to ensuring the public trust in gemstones, it is imperative to educate as many consumers as possible, and using the latest technology is a great way to do it.” %% The users can explore the changes in diamond color across the GIA D-to-Z Color Scale, typical inclusions and blemishes at various points in the GIA Clarity Scale, a diamond’s anatomy, how various parameters influence a diamond’s cut grade, how a diamond’s size changes by carat weight, and a GIA Grading Report Anatomy. The app also features direct access to GIA Report Check, a secure online database of GIA grading reports, and the special consumer feature, “My Diamond Wish List.” A retailer version, designed for use at point of sale, is also downloadable for free from GIA’s retailer support site www.retailer.gia.edu.%%
