Designer Farah Khan Ali’s journey took another significant turn recently with the opening of her flagship store titled ‘Farah Khan Fine Jewellery’ at Turner Road in Bandra, a western Mumbai suburb. The launch was a well-attended affair with big names from the Bollywood industry making it a star-studded event. It was a double whammy for Farah who also celebrated the twentieth anniversary of her eponymous fine jewellery label. Sandhya Sutodia presents a bird’s eye-view of the showroom, spread over two floors and which not only offers a visual delight, but jewellery themed around a story that is slated to change every few months.%% One of the most sought after jewellery designer, who has created a name internationally, Farah has completed 20 years in her field. An optimist to the core, Farah believes that even the word impossible reads ‘I’m possible’. “I am a creatively inclined soul who happened to come into jewellery designing by chance, only to discover that I was born for it,” says Farah. %% “It has taken me twenty long years to get here and contrary to what people imagine, the journey has been an uphill task strewn with many difficulties. It has been a long journey indeed where I have stumbled and I have fallen and even though I made mistakes, they were mine alone just as the success has been. Today, I am proud and happy to present this new flagship store in Mumbai and I hope my patrons are surprised with every visit, enjoying and reveling in the experience of owning a Farah Khan Fine Jewellery design,” she shares with her Twitter fans. The new store sells FK fine jewellery starting at Rs 30,000 and above. %% The two-level art deco outlet welcomed Farah’s brother-in-law HrithikRoshan, sister Suzanne Roshan, and husband DJ Aqeel Ali along with brother Zayed Khan. The guest list was packed with familiar Bollywood names. The outlet provided a great retail experience to the guests. The new store is a visual delight that one must experience. %%
Having established her presence with flagship stores in the capital city of Mumbai and New Delhi, the brand has also had successful retail shows all over India in places like Chennai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Kolkata and Ludhiana. The ‘Farah Khan Fine Jewellery’ brand is also looking at franchising its label in the metropolitan cities of India in the near future and is also likely to have international retail presence by 2013 in prominent fashion capitals of the world and is in talks with various international chains. In India, Farah Khan Fine Jewellery was launched in February 2004 and after receiving a good response from standalone store in Mumbai, Farah plans to relocate her Delhi mall store to a high street outlet. “We plan to relocate the Delhi store this year,” said Farah, adding that the brand is looking at big store. %% “Retail is a big thing in India as the spending power of consumers is increasing. It has tremendous opportunity and it is growing. Retail has evolved dramatically,” she added. %% Talking about her catering style to customers, she said customers can take appointments via email and the jewellery pieces are designed according to their need and requirement. “It is for the fine jewellery buyer who appreciates the quality of high end gemstones and the finishes that compliment such pieces as well as for the adventurous buyer who prefers to experiment with one of kind unique pieces that tell a story,” explains Farah. %% Also to stay ahead of the competition, the designer plans to have an online portal from where the customers can book the lightweight 18-carat diamond and gemstone studded jewellery, featuring majestic tigers, snakes, insects, floral motifs and Egyptian heads, among other innovative designs. Farah Khan Ali also has around 3,54,000 followers on twitter with whom she interacts with regularly updating them about her work. “I feel that via Internet I can communicate with my customers on regular basis,” she shares. %% Farah has also launched the Farah Khan Fine Jewellery iPad application in the Apple application store. “The App is a visual journey through the eyes of the designer wherein an idea becomes an inspiration and food for design and creation. Technology has become a very important part of our daily life and most people barely stay away from their phones and gadgets for more than a few minutes. The store gives a neo classical feel and the vivid orange windows stand out along with the unusual displays that have been created to incorporate the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme. Three larger than life displays stand out as they house the unusual props that serve as a backdrop for the jewellery that shines bright through the windows. The use of the colours like green, white, black, golden shows the innovation. %% The jewellery designer has also opened a manufacturing unit spread over 9,200 square feet with an aim to churn out high quality products right from the designing stage to the final product. “The manufacturing set up gives me an edge over others and at the end of the day it provides control over the products,” opines Farah. %% Large Columbian and Zambian emeralds, beautiful Burmese and Mozambique rubies, scintillating sapphires, precious pearls and dazzling diamonds along with various other gemstones set the tone for each beautiful signature FK jewel. “While my designs are flamboyant, ornate and adventurous.
