After a grand welcome at the Mumbai airport on September 30, 2013, Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Diamond Merchant Association’s Diamond Hall at the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Bandra-Kurla Complex. This is Gujarat Chief Minister’s first tour of the city since having been declared the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. An unprecedented show of support from the industrialists and traders gathered in huge numbers from Diamond industry was witnessed. The leaders of the party present at the occasion included Gopinath Munde, Jaywantiben Mehta, Kirit Somaiya, Mahesh Jethmalani and Ashish Shelar. Shiv Sena leader, Uddhav Thackeray came with his family. The merchants of the Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB), the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and the Mumbai Diamond Merchants Association (MDMA) hosted the leader at the BKC bourse, where he inaugurated the new Diamond Hall.%% As the Gujarat CM arrived on stage, the leaders of the Patel Samaj led him to a florally ornamented 'tulabharam' or weighing scale where they weighed him in silver and donated the proceeds. Modi swiftly announced that the money would go towards his pet project, erecting a tall iron statue of 'Lohpurush' Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to be built along the Sardar Sarovar dam. "We have named it the Statue of Unity and it will be twice the size of the Statue of Liberty,'' he said, and repeated his appeal for wrecks of iron from the farmer’s hull throughout the country.%% Addressing the audience, Narendra Modi said, “There have been a series of problems for the past nine years. Now it is for you to decide. Like the diamond, we need to make our nation shine. Many diamonds have shone, now it is for the nation to shine. And if you all decide no one can stop the nation form shining. There has been some of the other eclipse but it won’t last beyond 8-9 months. After that we will reject all the problems and move ahead with new strength.” He focused on the ‘trust deficit' that has developed towards the ruling UPA-2 alliance. Praising the Mumbaikars for rating second on an international honesty index, he then urged the diamond traders to work towards his vision of India Shining.%% He stated firmly that the nature of politics has changed but some politicians prefer to stay in the mindset of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He added that nobody can put the poison of caste or divisive in the minds of the youth, who understand only one Mantra and one language - that of VIKAS (development). Narendra Modi spoke about the growing trust deficit that prevails across the nation today. He recalled that the end of the 20th century and the first few years of the 21st century were years of hope but that changed in the time to come. He said that the nation placed faith in the current Government but that balloon of trust busted after 2009 and since then it has been a great fall. “The Government has not been able to keep the nation together. This is a Government with whom the entire nation is not ready to walk with. This never happened earlier,” declared Modi.%% Referring to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Dr. Nawaz Sharif, he said that efforts were made to show the courage of the Government and even in the press conference all the strongest words in the dictionary were used to give the message to the people. He attacked the Centre for the unconcealed misuse of central agencies like the CBI and the Income Tax Department. He stated, “They have lost control over everything else except the CBI and a little control over the Income Tax.” He affirmed that for a decade the Centre tried to malign Modi with lies but he is made of the same soil as Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel! At the end, thanking the people for their warm welcome, Modi said, “You have given a strong signal for change and this warm welcome illustrates that. It strengthens our resolve and will give them sleepless nights.”
