Hallmark system spells assurance for the buyer. However, in India, the system has often been misused by the malpractitioners. To keep tab on the various unethical processes, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has been painstakingly taking efforts to safeguard public against the fraud of adulteration and to oblige manufacturers to maintain legal standards of fineness. %% The current hallmark consists of five components - logo of BIS, the fineness number corresponding to the gold content or caratage in the jewellery, mark of BIS recognized Assay and Hallmarking Centre which certifies the quality, identification mark of the BIS certified jeweller, and the year of manufacture, denoted by a code letter. This current system lacks traceability and authenticity as lot number and date of assaying not captured are not being covered. In order to make the system further secured, BIS plans to introduce improved system of hallmark with 3 compensates – BIS logo, purity of gold and UID ( Assaying center code and Article ID). As per GS1 India’s suggestion, GS1 identifier (QR code or Bar code) would be printed on the jewellery certificate and article. It would carry a data string comprising of Type Identifier and a link. Type identifier will be mapped to the unique identity. It would be mapped to other details like lot ID, date of assaying etc. and linked to BIS portal where the user could login and validate. %% Each hallmarked article will have a card with QR Code. A singular set containing more than one article will have multiple UID for each item but only one card will be generated. Each card will have a unique serial number. There will be a provision for duplicate card generation in case of loss or damage. Articles that have not been assessed will also reflect on the card. Jewellers will also have an option of card printing. However, it is mandatory to maintain the inventory of cards consumed. The Assaying and Hallmarking Centre (A&HC) will issue the UID, Certificate of Hallmark Jewellery with GS1 identifier. GS1 certificate identification (GDTI) will map the “UID” linking back-end database for BIS Logo, Purity of gold, lot ID, date of assaying, marking center, jeweller details etc.
