With the SEZ status, the park is estimated to develop faster, as mentioned by GHB secretary Nanu Vanani. The project which was launched in 2004, is expected to be complete within another two years and would be developed in three phases. In the first phase, members will be allotted plots to begin work and tenders would be floated for infrastructural development.
Survey numbers of the plots under the SEZ, have been earmarked by the Ministry. Close to 300 diamond polishing units and around 10,000 jewellery manufacturing units have already booked their space.
Vanani mentioned that the park will become functional after the first phase is completed, i.e., by September this year.
The Union Ministry of Commerce has granted SEZ status to the gem and jewellery park being developed in Icchapore, near Surat. The park has been developed by Gujarat Hira Bourse (GHB), and has received clearance for its proposal from the Union Ministry.
