Southern Africa seems to be attracting Indian diamond jewellery manufacturers and workers, for their own respective reasons. Manufacturers are particularly being lured by the preferential access to diamonds in countries like Bostwana, Namibia, Angola and South Africa.

Almost 500 Indian workers from Surat have moved over to South Africa in view of the increased salaries they receive. The workers’ contract includes a salary of $60-$70 per carat in addition to lodging and boarding facilities and one all-expenses-paid trip home each year.
Workers with a good hand at cutting stones above 0.30 carat are being taken in, as mentioned by a senior official from an Indian company with a unit in South Africa.
