GIA India held its virtual alumni guest session on the topic, ‘Mistaken Identity.’ Jayesh Patel, Product Controller of Ruby, Fura Gems, was the panellist. The session started with the introduction of Jayesh Patel by Apoorva Deshingkar, Senior Director – Education and Market Development, GIA India. Jayesh Patel, a gemstone expert with a special focus on rubies, has more than 40 years of experience in the gem and jewellery industry. Born in Mogok, Burma, into a ruby and sapphire family business, Jayeshbhai has worked extensively in the ruby trade in Bangkok as well as many other international markets. In the ‘Mistaken Identity’ session, Jayeshbhai shared his extensive knowledge of rubies and interesting facts about red gemstones that are commonly encountered in the market. The instructor also enlightened the alumni about the inclusion sceneries of rubies that can help one identify and understand their origin.

Apoorva Deshingkar said, “The alumni session on ‘Mistaken Identity’ is a great series where we explore cases in which gemstones were mistaken for another type and species probably because they were identified based predominantly on colour. This session is the second in the series so far and we’re pleased with the exchange of insights this platform has provided so far to the GIA alumni.” Sharing his experience of the session, Amit Kapoor, GIA GG, AJP, GIA Pearls Graduate and Associate Vice President – Jewelry, Saffron Art Pvt. Ltd. said, “The session was well curated and provided the most accurate information needed for the gemstone industry. The visual gallery presentation and interaction with the instructor were also very helpful. The credibility of GIA and its research provides one with all the information required to have an edge in the industry, be it sourcing or selling. It also helps in building consumer confidence.”
