The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has allocated a $93,000 grant to advance an initiative aimed at eradicating the use of mercury in gold processing. This funding will support Mercury Free Mining (MFM) and the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) in introducing Goldrop technology to artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) in three Colombian communities. Over a six-month period, the grant will facilitate training sessions, conduct assessments, and gather feedback from participants. Johanna Levy, Vice President of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Programs at GIA, highlighted the importance of innovative solutions like Goldrop in safeguarding ASM communities against the harmful effects of mercury contamination in soil and water. GIA remains steadfast in supporting organizations such as MFM and ARM that pioneer mercury-free gold recovery methods while fostering community development. The grant encompasses various expenses, including personnel fees, travel, supplies, translation services, laboratory equipment, and continuous technical support for the participating communities. Additionally, it will generate essential data to facilitate the expansion of the program.

This grant marks GIA's second contribution to MFM and ARM, following a $50,000 donation in 2021 for evaluating the Goldrop process and initiating a pilot program. Toby Pomeroy, Executive Director of MFM, expressed gratitude for GIA's pivotal role in achieving significant milestones and underscored the urgency of continuing this vital work to protect the millions of artisanal gold miners from mercury exposure.
