The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will roll out redesigned colored stone reports and expanded origin-determination services beginning January 1, 2026. The update was announced from Carlsbad, California, on December 10, 2025.

The new reports will present gemological data in a revised format intended to highlight key characteristics. According to GIA, the redesign aims to provide clearer information for both the trade and consumers.

From January 2026, GIA will extend its origin-determination services to opal, peridot and demantoid garnet. These additions build on existing geographic origin services for alexandrite, emerald, Paraíba tourmaline, red spinel, ruby and sapphire, as well as the more recent origin reporting for untreated jadeite jade and omphacite jade from Myanmar (Burma) and Guatemala.

Shane McClure, Global Director of Colored Stone Services, said the expanded services are supported by GIA’s research collection of 32,000 samples gathered by its field gemologists. He noted that colored stone reporting has been part of the Institute’s offering for over 75 years and that accumulated laboratory expertise forms the basis for the updated reporting capabilities.

GIA will also revise weight categories and related fees for colored stone submissions. The updated structure will be published on GIA.edu on January 1, 2026. All items submitted on or after that date will be assessed under the new fee schedule and issued with the redesigned reports.
