Gemological Science International (GSI) organised an international field trip to the Luc Yen Ruby Mine in Vietnam for students of its Color Stone Professional (CSP) Programme. The visit was conducted from January 18 to 22, 2026, for the ninth batch of the course.

The programme aimed to connect classroom-based gemological education with practical exposure to mining and trade environments. Students were introduced to ruby geology, mining processes, gemstone sorting, valuation methods, and primary market interactions.

Luc Yen, located in Vietnam’s Yen Bai Province, is known for ruby and spinel deposits found in metamorphic marble and gneiss formations. During the visit, students observed manual and alluvial mining techniques, including gravel washing and on-site segregation of rough stones.

Participants also interacted with local miners to understand yield variations, operational challenges, and seasonal factors impacting small-scale gemstone extraction. These interactions provided insight into supply-side realities relevant to the coloured gemstone trade.

The itinerary included a visit to the Luc Yen gemstone market, where students observed live transactions between miners, traders, and buyers. The exercise highlighted pricing factors such as colour, clarity, size, and cutting potential, along with negotiation practices and buyer behaviour.

Additional activities in Hanoi, including outdoor and cultural experiences, were incorporated to support group learning and collaboration.

“The future of gemology lies in education that goes beyond textbooks. Exposure to mines, markets, and global trade ecosystems equips students with confidence, context, and credibility,” said Meenu Vyas, Global Head Gemologist (GSI).

The initiative forms part of GSI’s broader approach to experiential education and international exposure within its gemological training programmes.
