De Beers Group, in collaboration with Sotheby’s, has presented a 28.88-carat diamond sourced from Botswana’s Jwaneng mine, ahead of its scheduled auction at Sotheby’s High Jewellery sale in Hong Kong on April 23, 2026.

The diamond, titled the “Jwaneng 28.88,” is a round brilliant-cut, D-colour, internally flawless stone classified as Type IIa — a rare category accounting for less than 2% of global diamond production and known for exceptional optical and chemical purity.

The polished stone originates from a 114.83-carat rough recovered at the Jwaneng mine, operated by Debswana, a joint venture between De Beers and the Government of Botswana. Known for its high-value output, Jwaneng continues to play a central role in De Beers’ premium diamond supply.

The diamond was first unveiled at Maison Assouline in London, where it formed part of a curated showcase highlighting the journey of natural diamonds from source to market. The presentation aligns with De Beers’ ongoing emphasis on traceability and provenance as key differentiators in the natural diamond category.

Sotheby’s has estimated the stone to realize between $2.2 million and $2.8 million at auction. The diamond will serve as a key highlight of the auction house’s Luxury Week sale in Hong Kong, a market that continues to demonstrate consistent demand for rare, high-quality stones.

For the trade, the unveiling reinforces the importance of storytelling, origin transparency and rarity in driving consumer interest at the top end of the market. It also reflects the strategic role of auctions as platforms for price discovery and global visibility for exceptional diamonds.
