Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery Lab has introduced origin determination reports for Paraiba tourmalines, expanding its coloured gemstone certification services amid growing demand for provenance verification and standardized gemstone nomenclature.
Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ) Lab has launched origin determination reports for Paraiba tourmalines, expanding its coloured gemstone certification portfolio in response to increasing global demand for gemstone traceability and provenance verification.
The service was officially introduced on May 4, 2026, and adds Paraiba tourmalines to the laboratory’s existing origin determination capabilities for emeralds, rubies, and sapphires. The initiative is aimed at supporting transparency and standardisation within the coloured gemstone trade.
According to the laboratory, the reports will determine the probable geographic origin of Paraiba tourmalines through a combination of chemical composition analysis, spectroscopic testing, and inclusion studies. The lab stated that the move aligns with rising industry focus on disclosure, scientific certification, and consumer confidence in high-value coloured gemstones.
IIGJ Lab has also revised its nomenclature criteria for Paraiba tourmalines. Under the updated standards, only blue-to-green tourmalines coloured by the presence of copper and manganese will qualify for the “Paraiba” designation. Copper-bearing stones in pink or purple hues will not be classified as Paraiba, although the presence of copper and manganese will continue to be disclosed within report comments.
Originally associated with Brazil’s Paraiba region, Paraiba tourmalines are now also sourced commercially from Mozambique and Nigeria. The stones are known for their vivid neon blue and green-blue colours and continue to command strong demand in the international jewellery market.
The laboratory has introduced separate pricing structures for single stones, packet lots, and bead strings, with preferential rates available for members of Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council.
